Diet Tips For Seniors

Diet Tip Three: Snack!

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, eating throughout the day is the best way to help you meet your weight loss goals. Though Heart of Almondswe’ll talk more about healthy meal planning in the future, it’s important to remember that eating enough calories is absolutely imperative. Aim for a small meal every 4-6 hours. According to Tracy Rose, the feature writer for weight loss at Suite101.com, “Eating every 2-3 hours tells your body that you are giving it energy and it does not need to store calories as fat. Skipping meals, however, will not result in weight loss because your body will store the fat.

Eating frequently will make you feel full and keep hunger at bay.” When you don’t ingest the proper amount of calories, your body can go into what’s known as “starvation mode”, storing excess calories as fat so that it can get the energy it needs. By keeping your body fueled throughout the day with healthy, whole foods, you will find that weight loss becomes easier. Additionally, you will most likely find yourself more energized!

Diet Tip Four: Super-foods!

Web MD offers a list of super-foods including blueberries, broccoli, and oats. Super-foods are beneficial for a variety of reasons, from their anti-oxidant powers to their lean protein content.

Most of these foods are beneficial for your overall well-being even beyond your short-term weight loss goals. One of my favorite super-foods is green tea. A cup of unsweetened green tea, either hot or iced, has numerous benefits. According to Harvard Health Publications, “Green tea is the best food source of a group called catechins. In test tubes, catechins are more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Studies have found an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder.” Incorporating super-foods into your diet is a great way to boost your overall well-being.
