Rhode Island Medicaid

Funded by both the federal and state governments, Medicaid is an important health program for people with lower incomes, elderly people, people with disabilities, and some families with children.

The state Department of Human Services administers RI Medical Assistance, Rhode Island’s Medicaid program, and recipients must be American citizens or legal permanent residents living in Rhode Island who fall into certain qualifying categories.

Qualifying categories for Medicaid eligibility include:

  • the elderly
  • the physically disabled
  • the mentally disabled
  • severely disabled children
  • pregnant women
  • low income adults
  • low income children

By 2014, most adults across the country who are under age 65 and have incomes under $15,000 will qualify for Medicaid. To help determine the likelihood of your eligibility for RI Medical Assistance, however, you should select the RI Medical Assistance option that is applicable to your situation and view eligibility criteria as of July 2013.

Rhode Island residents over 65 may qualify for RI Medical Assistance if their work history does not qualify them for Medicare, their income does not exceed the Federal Poverty Level, and savings total less than $4,000 for an individual or $6,000 for a couple. People over 65 may also qualify for assistance if they meet other eligibility requirements.

Dual Eligibility

Some people are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. In such cases, Medicare is the primary payer.

If you are a Medicare dual eligible individual, looking into Medicare Advantage plans may be a wise move and a good investment. Call MedicareMall toll-free at 1-877-413-1556 for help determining whether Medicare Advantage is right for you.
